Fatal Truck Crash in New Stanton, PA — Fiery Wreck on Route 66 Bridge (July 18, 2025)

New Stanton, PA (July 20, 2025) – A devastating crash involving a triaxle truck resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man and caused a significant fire that temporarily shut down a key route in Westmoreland County on Thursday morning.

According to reports, the crash occurred around 8 a.m. on July 18, where Route 119 becomes Route 66 in New Stanton. The triaxle truck, which was carrying a load of asphalt, crashed and spilled diesel fuel, igniting a fire on the bridge crossing Interstate 70.

The driver, later identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office as Carl Noonan of Pennsylvania, was trapped inside the vehicle. Bystanders rushed to the scene and attempted to extinguish the fire and rescue Noonan before emergency services arrived. He was airlifted to UPMC Mercy but sadly succumbed to his injuries Friday afternoon.

The impact of the crash left the truck’s bed over a hillside and scattered debris across the highway, closing the northbound lanes for several hours. The fire damaged portions of the bridge, and cleanup efforts extended through the early afternoon. The crash reportedly began on Route 119, crossed the bridge over Interstate 70, and ended on Route 66 near North Center Avenue.

Pennsylvania State Police in Greensburg are leading the investigation.
