Hilo, HI (January 17, 2026) – A man was killed Thursday evening following a violent two-vehicle crash in Hilo, prompting an ongoing investigation by Hawaii Island Police.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, the fatal collision occurred around 6:23 p.m. on January 15 at the intersection of Highway 19 and Hikina Place. Investigators say a Ford F150 was heading southbound, Hilo-bound, when it crossed over the centerline and slammed head-on into a northbound Chevy Silverado.
First responders arrived shortly after the incident and located the driver of the Ford F150 unresponsive. Life-saving efforts were initiated by fire and medical teams, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:57 p.m. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
The driver of the Silverado, a 46-year-old woman from Laupāhoehoe, was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities believe speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash. A coroner’s inquest is underway, and an autopsy has been ordered.
