Fremont County, ID (July 6, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision claimed the life of a juvenile passenger and sent several others to the hospital Friday morning on U.S. Highway 20 near Island Park, according to Idaho State Police.
According to reports, the deadly accident occurred around 11:43 a.m. on July 4 at milepost 380.8, south of Island Park in Fremont County. Investigators say a 40-year-old man from Shelley was driving a 2026 Freightliner semi-truck westbound when he veered off the shoulder. The driver overcorrected, sending the semi-truck back onto the road before it crossed the median and struck a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan traveling eastbound.
The impact caused the minivan — which was carrying eight people from Idaho Falls, including four adults and three juveniles — to overturn, blocking all eastbound lanes. One juvenile passenger in the Toyota died from injuries sustained in the crash. The semi-truck driver and all occupants of the minivan were transported by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed that everyone involved was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The crash closed both directions of U.S. Highway 20 for about five hours while crews and multiple responding agencies worked the scene. Idaho State Police continues to investigate what led to the semi-truck leaving the roadway.
