Columbia County, OR (October 12, 2024) – An accident on Highway 30 near milepost 24 early on October 8 resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to the Oregon State Police.
The investigation revealed that 82-year-old Gerald George Rood of Warren was driving eastbound in a Toyota Supra when he attempted to make a U-turn into the westbound lane. During the maneuver, the Toyota blocked the westbound lane and was struck by a Chevrolet 3500 driven by 55-year-old Clifford James Scott Jr. of Scappoose.
The impact caused Scott’s Chevrolet to veer into the eastbound lanes, where it nearly collided head-on with a Subaru Forester. The driver of the Subaru, identified as Fernando Baca, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Scott and his passenger, 55-year-old Trisha Marie Talent of Forest Grove, sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. Rood suffered minor injuries. The highway was closed for approximately five hours during the investigation.
The incident remains under investigation.
