Tucson, AZ (October 23, 2024) — The Arizona Department of Public Safety has released additional details about a fatal crash that occurred on State Route 86 near San Joaquin Road.
The accident took place at approximately 4:42 p.m. on the westbound lanes of SR-86 at milepost 163. According to authorities, a Toyota passenger vehicle traveling westbound ran a red light at the intersection of San Joaquin Road and collided with the left side of a Nissan SUV.
The force of the impact pushed the SUV into the median, where it caught fire. Tragically, all five occupants inside the SUV died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries. Authorities reported that the Toyota had been observed driving recklessly before the crash, and impairment is suspected as a contributing factor.
