Genesee Township, MI (October 22, 2024) — A tragic accident occurred on Dort Highway Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of a local Genesee Township man.
According to the Genesee Township Police Department, the incident took place around 3:15 p.m. when the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, traveling southbound, crossed the center line near Lewis Road. The truck collided head-on with a northbound fuel tanker, causing the tanker to veer off the road and into a ditch.
The 57-year-old driver of the Silverado, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the driver of the fuel tanker was not injured in the crash.
The impact led to a fuel spill, prompting the Genesee Township Fire Department and the Genesee County Hazardous Materials Team to secure the area and transfer the tanker’s contents into another vehicle. As a result, the 8000 block of Dort Highway was closed for several hours.
The Genesee Township police, along with the Michigan State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, are actively investigating the cause of the collision.
