Chanute, KS (December 31, 2025) – A Kansas deputy is recovering and back on duty following a terrifying airborne collision that ended in a hit-and-run crash Friday night.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on December 26 along 160th Road between Kiowa Road and Jackson Road. The deputy was parked legally on a pasture access drive when a westbound vehicle left the roadway, struck a ditch, and launched into the air after hitting a culvert—crashing head-on into her patrol SUV.
Despite sustaining injuries, the deputy was able to radio for help. She was transported to a nearby hospital, treated, and later released. Her emergency lights failed after the crash due to battery damage caused by the impact.
The driver fled the scene, but dash cam footage and social media tips led authorities to the suspect 26 miles away in Wilson County. The vehicle was located and 48-year-old Jeremy L. Borton of Buffalo was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated battery and leaving the scene of a crash.
