Industrial Accident in Mobile, AL — Two Workers Die After Gas Exposure in Manhole (August 11, 2025)

Mobile, AL (August 15, 2025) — Two utility workers were killed and a third injured Monday morning in a tragic industrial accident while working on a sewer line project in Mobile, according to local authorities.

According to reports, the Mobile Police Department responded around 8:23 a.m. on August 11 to Princeton Woods after receiving reports of an industrial emergency involving confined space gas exposure.

Officials identified the deceased as Herber Rivas, 50, and Garrett Robinson, 31. According to investigators, Robinson was working inside a sewer manhole when he was overcome by what is believed to have been toxic gas. Rivas entered the manhole to assist but was also quickly overcome.

A third worker attempted to enter the confined space but managed to escape after becoming disoriented. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department’s Technical Rescue team conducted an extensive recovery operation to bring Rivas and Robinson to the surface. Both men were transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The third worker remains hospitalized and is recovering, according to police.
