Erie Township, MI (October 12, 2024) – A man was struck and killed by an SUV while walking along the edge of East Sterns Road near South Dixie Highway on Wednesday night.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 42-year-old Jacob J. Calleja of East Tawas, Michigan, was walking near the fog line on the edge of the road around 7:45 p.m. when he was hit by an eastbound SUV. The SUV was driven by 35-year-old Brian J. Goldberg of Toledo, who had two passengers with him at the time. Neither Goldberg nor his passengers were injured in the incident.

Calleja, who was wearing dark clothing, was found in a ditch on the south side of the road. He was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have stated that neither alcohol nor speed played a role in the crash. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
