St. Petersburg, FL (June 16, 2025) – A tragic collision in St. Petersburg claimed the life of a young motorcyclist Friday after an SUV turned into his path.

According to reports, Mason Derks, 19, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Park Street North, approaching the intersection at 28th Avenue North, when the crash occurred. A Mazda SUV, heading west on 28th Avenue North, attempted a southbound turn onto Park Street North and crossed directly into Derks’ path.

Derks was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on June 14. Authorities stated that the SUV driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation by the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators work to determine all contributing factors.
