West Hazleton, PA (November 20, 2025) — Icy road conditions contributed to a devastating chain-reaction crash early Monday morning on Interstate 81 southbound that left one person dead and several others injured.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the incident happened at approximately 6 a.m. on November 18 near mile-marker 144.7, just south of the West Hazleton exit. The crash began when a Hyundai Sonata lost control on the slick highway, crashing into both a concrete barrier and guide rail before coming to rest on the right shoulder.
Moments later, a Dodge Dakota slid on the ice and struck the stopped Sonata. The pileup escalated when a Jeep collided with a Mercedes-Benz, leading to the Jeep being struck by a Ford Econoline Van, which also hit the other stopped vehicles. A tractor-trailer then jackknifed across both lanes, ultimately slamming into the Dodge Dakota.
The driver of the Ford Econoline Van died at the scene. Multiple injuries were also reported.
