According to reports, the deadly collision occurred around 2:40 p.m. on June 28 in the westbound lanes of I-20, just east of Hiram Road. Investigators say traffic had slowed in the area when the driver of one of the 18-wheelers failed to see the slowdown and crashed into multiple vehicles ahead, triggering a violent chain-reaction pileup involving three big rigs and four passenger cars.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and worked for hours to free victims from the wreckage. Five people were tragically pronounced dead as a result of the crash, while several others suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical.
