Whitpain Township, PA (September 16, 2025) – Two people were seriously injured Monday afternoon after a tire from another vehicle flew into their windshield on the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on September 16 at the interchange of I-276 west and I-476 north in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.
Authorities say a vehicle traveling southbound on I-476 lost a tire, which became airborne and smashed into the windshield of a dark-colored Range Rover traveling northbound on I-476 at mile marker 22.8. The impact left two occupants of the SUV with injuries severe enough to warrant air transport to a nearby hospital.
Their current conditions have not been released.
The crash led to the closure of both directions of I-476 for approximately two hours. Traffic resumed around 3:30 p.m. following significant delays and miles-long backups.
