Jefferson County, MO (January 18, 2026) – An 80-year-old man was hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash along southbound U.S. Highway 61 just north of Schmidt Road on the afternoon of January 14.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 1:16 p.m. A 2023 Rivian EDV, driven by a 27-year-old man from Florissant, was stopped on the shoulder of US 61 when it attempted to re-enter the roadway. As the Rivian merged into traffic, it struck a 2016 Kia Soul, driven by an 80-year-old man from Crystal City. The impact caused the Kia to overturn.
Emergency responders from Joachim Plattin Ambulance District transported the Kia driver to Mercy Hospital Jefferson with moderate injuries. The Rivian was driven from the scene, while the Kia sustained total damage and was towed.
