Pompano Beach, FL (July 8, 2025) — A tragic overnight incident took the lives of two people in Pompano Beach when a wrong-way driver caused a fiery collision on the Florida Turnpike.
According to reports, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash in the northbound lanes just south of Atlantic Boulevard around 1 a.m. on July 7. Authorities say the driver of an Acura TL sedan was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when the vehicle struck a Mercedes-Benz A220 head-on. The impact caused the Acura to spin out, hit a concrete barrier, and catch fire.
Both the Acura driver, a Jensen Beach resident, and the 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver from the Orlando area were killed at the scene. A 22-year-old passenger from Key West was transported to North Broward Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the wreck.
The crash forced the closure of the northbound Turnpike between Commercial Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard for several hours as investigators worked to clear the scene and determine what led to the wrong-way driving.
