Grand Rapids, MI (December 3, 2025) – A semi-truck crash on Tuesday morning caused significant structural damage and has shut down a major ramp in Grand Rapids indefinitely. The incident occurred on the ramp connecting westbound Interstate 196 to southbound US-131 at the S-curve around 11:00 a.m. on December 2.
According to the Michigan State Police, the semi-truck was hauling an estimated 140,000 pounds of pea gravel and sand when the front end of the truck began to “pitch” left. The driver attempted to regain control, but the vehicle veered into the ramp and slammed into a concrete barrier, becoming partially lodged under the structure. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.
Due to the severity of the impact, the Michigan Department of Transportation has closed the ramp for a full structural inspection. Officials have confirmed that the ramp will remain closed until at least April 30, 2026.
