According to the Georgia State Patrol , Officer Caleb Abney of the Hahira Police Department was inside his marked patrol vehicle with emergency equipment activated while conducting a traffic stop on a Nissan on the east shoulder of the Interstate. Authorities stated that a northbound Chevrolet Camaro failed to maintain its lane, traveled onto the shoulder, and struck the rear of the patrol vehicle. The impact pushed the patrol unit into the rear of the Nissan. All three vehicles, including the Camaro, came to rest off the roadway. Officer Abney and the driver of the Camaro both sustained fatal injuries at the scene.
