Wausau, WI (June 26, 2025) — A 30-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle late Monday night after running into traffic on Highway 29 near 72nd Avenue, according to authorities.
According to reports, officers with the Wausau Police Department were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. on June 23 to a call about a man lying in the westbound lane of the highway. Upon arrival, the man reportedly claimed to have a firearm and began fleeing from police on foot.
He ran west and then crossed into the eastbound lanes, where he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. First responders, including Wausau Fire/EMS, administered aid immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two occupants of the vehicle that struck him sustained minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital. The highway was closed for approximately five hours as investigators processed the scene.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office continues to lead the investigation.
