Wayne Township, OH (October 20, 2024) — A tragic head-on collision on Thursday morning has left an Ohio school district grieving the loss of one student, while another student and a teacher remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on West Elkton Road, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. A motorist driving behind one of the involved vehicles witnessed the crash and immediately reported it to 911.
Authorities say the accident happened when a 16-year-old male driving a 2005 Pontiac crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 60-year-old Kevin Johnson, a social studies teacher at Edgewood City Schools.
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His 13-year-old sister, a passenger in the car, was flown to Dayton Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Johnson was also airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition.
The two siblings were Preble Shawnee Local Schools students. The crash remains under investigation.
