According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred just after 9:30 p.m. on September 26 at the intersection of Palm Canyon Drive and Via Las Palmas. Authorities reported that Von Bargen was walking eastbound across the road when he was hit by a vehicle traveling south.
