Polk City, IA (October 11, 2025) – A tragic crash in Polk County claimed the life of a cyclist Thursday when she was struck by a dump truck while crossing a roadway near Polk City.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the collision occurred as 44-year-old Courtney R. Petersen of Ankeny was riding a recumbent-style bicycle along the High Trestle Trail. Petersen was attempting to cross Northwest 44th Street east of Polk City when she was struck by the oncoming dump truck.
Emergency responders pronounced Petersen deceased at the scene. The crash prompted authorities to close Northwest 44th Street for several hours Thursday as investigators examined the site. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement.
