According to reports, the incident happened around 9:40 p.m. on August 3. California Highway Patrol officers responded to a crash scene near the reservoir, southwest of Stockton, and discovered the overturned vehicle partially underwater.

Investigators say the Toyota was traveling on a dirt road adjacent to the water when it struck several large rocks and rolled into the forebay. The impact caused the car to overturn. A passenger inside the vehicle did not survive.

The driver fled the scene before officers arrived. Authorities have not identified the individual but are actively searching for them as part of the ongoing investigation. CHP officials stated that alcohol may have been involved.
