Richland, NY (September 24, 2025) – A tragic incident was uncovered Monday morning when New York State Police discovered a vehicle that had veered off Interstate 81 southbound in Richland.
According to the New York State Police, troopers were dispatched to the scene around 8:30 a.m. on September 22 after being notified of a car located off the roadway. Upon arrival, authorities found a 2008 black BMW M6, which had exited the highway, entered the median, hit a ditch, and ultimately crashed into a wooded area where it struck a tree.
The driver, 33-year-old Alexander J. Thornton of Clay, had been reported missing earlier this month and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities do not yet know exactly when the crash occurred. Thornton had last been seen on September 5, and he was listed as a vulnerable missing adult on September 7.
