Monroe County, GA (August 29, 2026) – A two vehicle crash near the entrance to Plant Scherer in Monroe County claimed the life of a 25 year old man Thursday evening, August 27. The collision occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Highway 87 and also left two other people hospitalized.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, deputies responded to Highway 87 near the Plant Scherer entrance after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a Tesla Model Y and a Kia Sorento. Investigators determined that the Tesla hydroplaned on the wet roadway, crossed into the path of the Kia, and the two vehicles collided.
The driver of the Tesla, identified by the Monroe County Coroner as 25 year old Jacob Rainwater, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Kia Sorento were transported to a hospital in Macon for treatment. Officials have not released updates regarding their conditions.
