Banks, ID. (September 22, 2025) — A devastating crash shut down both directions of Idaho 55 for approximately 12 hours on Saturday after a pickup truck veered off the highway and into the Payette River, resulting in one fatality.
According to the Idaho State Police, the crash occurred around 6:00 p.m. on September 20 near mile marker 79, north of Banks. A 45-year-old man from Caldwell was traveling northbound in a Ford pickup when the vehicle drifted off the right shoulder. Police say the driver overcorrected, lost control, and the truck plunged down an embankment into the river.
The driver reportedly escaped the submerged vehicle but succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 25-year-old male passenger was airlifted to a nearby hospital by Life Flight Network. His current condition has not been released.
