Wright County, IA (September 9, 2025) – A deadly single-vehicle crash involving a Chevrolet Cobalt on County Road R-38 claimed one life and injured two others Sunday night, according to local authorities.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:19 p.m. on September 8, approximately eight miles south of Clarion. A 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 24-year-old Josue Castanon Coronado left the roadway when the passenger-side tires dropped off the edge. The vehicle struck a utility pole, veered into a cornfield, and caught fire.
All three occupants were ejected. Michael Mendez, 36, of Webster City, died from his injuries at the scene. Josue Coronado and passenger Antoni Emmanuel Castanon Coronado, 20, both suffered injuries and were transported by emergency responders.
Authorities noted that none of the individuals in the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
