Salinas, CA (October 16, 2025) – Joel Nunez-Vargas, 46, of Yuma, Arizona, was one of two people killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash Sunday evening on Highway 101 near Chualar River Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 6:49 p.m. on October 12. Authorities say 41-year-old Efrain Plascencia of Salinas was driving a white Kia SUV northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 when he struck a black Honda sedan head-on. Nunez-Vargas was behind the wheel of the Honda.

A third vehicle, a white Toyota sedan driven by a 29-year-old Salinas resident, was also involved in the crash. Plascencia and Nunez-Vargas both died at the scene.

A female passenger and two minors riding in Plascencia’s SUV were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The cause of the wrong-way driving remains under investigation.
