Manhattan, NY (September 25, 2025) – A 50-year-old woman visiting from Germany was killed and her husband critically injured in a horrifying hit-and-run crash Wednesday afternoon in Midtown Manhattan.
According to the New York City Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. on September 24 at the intersection of West 40th Street and Fifth Avenue, near Bryant Park and the New York Public Library.
Police say a Toyota Sienna minivan, initially blocking the intersection while facing eastbound on 40th Street, suddenly reversed, striking the couple in a crosswalk and pinning them against a box truck that was stopped at the light.
The woman died at the scene. Her 55-year-old husband suffered a skull fracture and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. Both victims were tourists from Germany, and their identities have not yet been released.
The 40-year-old male driver fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by officers near Eighth Avenue and West 38th Street. The incident remains under investigation.
