Commerce Township, MI (September 10, 2025) – A 30-year-old man from Waterford Township died in a violent multi-vehicle collision Thursday evening at the intersection of M-5 and Pontiac Trail, authorities confirmed.
According to the Michigan State Police, the fatal crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. on September 5. The victim, identified as Matthew John Szakal, was operating a 2017 Chevrolet Trax when his vehicle was struck by a northbound 2021 Lexus RC. The Lexus, driven by a 51-year-old man from Sterling Heights, reportedly ran off the roadway and traveled several hundred feet through weeds before re-entering traffic. It then jumped the curb in a roundabout and collided with Szakal’s vehicle.
The impact pushed Szakal’s car into a third vehicle, a 2021 Honda CRV driven by a 64-year-old woman from Wixom, who sustained minor injuries.
Szakal was wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lexus driver, believed to have been speeding and under the influence of alcohol, suffered serious injuries and is currently in custody. A blood test has been ordered.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
