Bridgewater, New Jersey (June 5, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash on Route 22 East in Bridgewater claimed the life of a 91-year-old man and left a 93-year-old woman injured Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.
According to the New Jersey State Police, officers responded to the collision at approximately 4:06 p.m. on May 31 near Grove Street on Route 22 East. A preliminary investigation found that a white Tesla reportedly came to a complete stop in the center lane of the highway, causing traffic behind it to slow and stop.
Police said a 2018 Subaru Outback stopped behind the Tesla, but a 2002 Buick LeSabre traveling behind the Subaru was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the Subaru. The impact caused the Subaru to spin into the left lane. The Buick then lost control, crossed multiple lanes, left the roadway, and traveled into the center median where it collided with a tree.
Officers located the Buick approximately one-quarter mile east of the initial collision. The driver, a 91-year-old Bridgewater man, was found unresponsive inside the vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts by officers and paramedics, he later died after being transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
A 93-year-old female passenger in the Buick suffered minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital for treatment. Authorities said the three occupants of the Subaru were not injured.
Route 22 East remained closed for approximately six hours while investigators processed the scene. Officials have not released additional information regarding the occupants of the Tesla, and the crash remains under investigation by the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
