According to the California Highway Patrol , the crash occurred before 11 a.m. on February 9, 2026, in the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation area south of Interstate 8 and south of Grays Well Road. Authorities reported that two men were riding a 2017 Polaris RZR Turbo Pro Star when the vehicle traveled over a sand hill. The front of the off road vehicle crashed into the bottom of a sand bowl, causing it to overturn onto its roof.
The 49 year old driver from Ephrata, Washington was able to exit the vehicle on his own and suffered lacerations to his head. The 81 year old passenger from Casa Grande, Arizona had to be removed from the vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts by United States Border Patrol agents and the Imperial County Fire Department, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
