Tucumcari, NM (June 3, 2025) — Two separate crashes on Interstate 40 early Sunday morning claimed two lives and injured several others near Tucumcari.

According to reports, New Mexico State Police first responded around 5 a.m. on June 1 to a crash involving three semi-trucks near milepost 267. Preliminary findings indicate the first truck veered off the road while traveling eastbound, overcorrected, and overturned. A second truck attempting to avoid the wreck also overturned, and a third truck subsequently crashed into the first vehicle.

The driver of the third semi-truck was transported to a hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. The drivers of the first two trucks sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., while authorities were managing the initial scene, another semi-truck collided with a patrol vehicle and flipped after veering off onto the shoulder. Although the driver and the officer were hospitalized, a passenger in the semi-truck died at the scene.

Investigations into both crashes remain ongoing.
