Richmond, CA (Aug. 13, 2025) – A wrong-way driver is in critical condition after a violent head-on crash near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge early Tuesday morning that claimed the life of another motorist, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to reports, the collision happened around 1:40 a.m. on August 12 when a Range Rover traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 slammed into a Honda Civic just east of the toll plaza. Richmond firefighters pronounced the Civic’s driver dead at the scene.
The Range Rover burst into flames after the crash. First responders in the area stopped to pull the driver from the burning vehicle before detaining them. That driver was later transported to a hospital with serious injuries. CHP continues to investigate and has not ruled out impairment as a factor.
