Springfield, MA (August 11, 2026) – A residential fire in Springfield left one firefighter injured and displaced 11 residents Saturday afternoon after flames broke out at a multi-family home in the Forest Park neighborhood.
Around noon on August 8, firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at 491-493 White Street. According to the Springfield Fire Department, crews arrived to find flames coming from the kitchen on the second floor of the residence. Firefighters quickly worked to bring the blaze under control while ensuring everyone inside the building was safely evacuated.
One firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries while battling the fire and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fire crews also rescued three cats from the burning home. In total, 11 residents were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
An investigation conducted by the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad determined the fire was caused by unattended cooking. Officials continue to remind residents to remain in the kitchen while preparing meals and to never leave cooking food unattended, as cooking-related fires remain one of the leading causes of residential fires.
