Upton County, TX (October 14, 2025) – A late-night crash along a stretch of State Highway 349 in Upton County turned deadly Friday, taking the life of a Midland man.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the fatal incident happened around 11:30 p.m. on October 10 near mile marker 376. Authorities say a 2003 Cadillac Escalade was parked on the shoulder of the highway while towing a trailer. The vehicle attempted to re-enter traffic in an unsafe manner, leading to a collision with an oncoming 2017 Chevrolet Silverado.
The driver of the Silverado, 38-year-old Gerardo Garcia of Midland, was unable to avoid the trailer and crashed into it. He was wearing a seatbelt but sadly died at the scene.
The Escalade driver, identified as 48-year-old Steven Paul Latzel of Midkiff, was uninjured.
The Texas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
