According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. on December 5 near mile marker 385. Emergency responders initially located the involved vehicles still in active lanes of traffic. A QRV unit reported that one vehicle was nearly struck multiple times before parties moved to a safer location off the roadway.
Vehicles were eventually relocated near the 640/640 split at the west end, allowing traffic to continue flowing.
