Bakersfield, CA (September 22, 2025) – Two people were killed Saturday in a deadly two-vehicle crash on State Route 65 at the intersection with Famoso Road, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred on September 20 when a 76-year-old man driving a 2016 Honda Fit eastbound on Famoso Road allegedly ran a red light. As the vehicle entered the intersection, it was struck by a southbound 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer on Highway 65, driven by a 55-year-old man.

The violent impact caused the Honda to lose control and stop on the east dirt shoulder. The Freightliner also veered off the road, struck a dirt embankment, and overturned. Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 65 were shut down due to the crash.

Tragically, the male driver and his 66-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Hospital.

Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role. The investigation remains ongoing.
