San Mateo County, CA (September 9, 2025) – A California Highway Patrol officer was hospitalized Monday afternoon after being struck by a Tesla while responding to a hazard on Interstate 280 in San Mateo County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on September 8, just south of Alpine Road. The officer had initiated a traffic break after receiving reports of an electric leaf blower obstructing lanes on I-280, south of Page Mill Road.
While emergency lights were activated on the officer’s CHP motorcycle, a 2026 Tesla Model Y crashed into the bike, ejecting the officer. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported for medical care.
The Tesla driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. Investigators are working to determine whether Tesla’s driver assistance system was active at the time of the crash.
Multiple southbound lanes of I-280 were shut down for several hours during the investigation.
