According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident occurred around 4:14 p.m. on August 29. Investigators say 18-year-old Kaelin K. Smith of College Place was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla northbound on Wilbur Avenue when she reportedly failed to yield at the intersection. Her vehicle collided with a 2012 Toyota Tacoma traveling eastbound on U.S. 12 and driven by 71-year-old Richard J. Meyer of Kennewick.

Smith was transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland for treatment. Meyer and his passenger, 71-year-old Sally J. Smith, were taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.

Authorities noted that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
