Oakland, CA (June 1, 2025) – A tragic crash claimed the life of a respected educator in Oakland Wednesday evening following a police pursuit.
According to reports, Dr. Marvin Boomer, a teacher and College and Career Pathways Coach at Castlemont High School, was fatally struck around 12th Avenue and East 21st Street while walking with a companion. California Highway Patrol officers had just ended their pursuit of a vehicle when it crashed into the pedestrians. Dr. Boomer’s companion suffered minor injuries.
Authorities arrested the fleeing driver, identified as 18-year-old Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia of Oakland, shortly after the crash. The suspect was wanted in connection with a felony evading incident.
Oakland Unified School District confirmed Boomer’s passing and praised his lasting contributions to the school community, highlighting his years of service, mentorship, and dedication to students.
A vigil in Boomer’s honor was held Friday evening at the crash site.
