Madera County, CA (January 5, 2026) – A violent collision southwest of Madera turned deadly on New Year’s Day when a Honda CRV struck a big rig and flipped over, killing two people and injuring others, according to authorities.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. on January 1 at the intersection of Road 23 and Avenue 13. A Honda CRV reportedly ran a stop sign and broadsided the trailer of a big rig driven by a 47-year-old man from Lodi. The impact sent the CRV rolling out of control.
Four occupants in the CRV — three men and one woman — were ejected during the rollover. Two of them died at the scene. The remaining individuals suffered major injuries and were transported for medical treatment. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
CHP said alcohol and/or drugs may have played a role. The crash is still under investigation.
