Chippewa County, WI (June 11, 2025) – Multiple people were injured Monday afternoon after a semi-truck collided with a highway maintenance vehicle in Chippewa County, causing a hazardous fuel spill and roadway disruption.

According to reports, the crash occurred at approximately 4:56 p.m. on June 9 in the westbound lanes of South Highway 29, just before the County Highway T exit ramp. Wheaton Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and confirmed that a private contractor had been painting fog lines when their safety truck, equipped with a crash barrier, was struck from behind by a semi-truck.

The impact caused one of the semi’s saddle tanks to rupture, spilling roughly 50 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. Emergency crews quickly contained the spill and worked to clear debris.

The driver of the safety vehicle sustained minor injuries, and a nearby worker was also injured by debris from the collision. No further details on the semi-truck driver’s condition were released.
