Newport Beach, CA (January 25, 2026) – A high-speed wrong-way collision on State Route 73 Friday night left three people hospitalized with major injuries in Newport Beach.
According to the California Highway Patrol, reports began coming in around 8:05 p.m. on January 23 of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the 73 Freeway near Greenfield Drive in Laguna Niguel. Witnesses initially reported speeds of approximately 45 miles per hour, escalating to over 100 miles per hour as the vehicle neared El Toro Road.
At approximately 8:16 p.m., the wrong-way driver crashed into another car near Bonita Canyon Drive in Newport Beach. The impact severely damaged both vehicles and resulted in serious injuries to at least three individuals, all of whom were transported to area hospitals.
Authorities say the vehicle responsible is registered to a missing person from Cypress. No arrests have been confirmed at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
