Randolph County, NC (December 18, 2025) – A deadly wrong-way collision left one driver dead and another seriously injured Tuesday afternoon along U.S. Highway 421.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers were called to the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 421 near North Carolina Highway 49 around 4:59 p.m. on December 16 after reports of a wrong-way motorist. Investigators said a 2003 Dodge Ram, driven by 53-year-old Dean Andrew Nance of Franklinville, was headed north in the southbound lanes when it struck a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta head-on.

The driver of the Jetta, 23-year-old Seth Andrew Laws of Siler City, sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead while being transported to Moses Cone Hospital. Nance suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the same hospital for treatment. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
