Ruffin, SC (July 30, 2026) – A tragic house fire in the Ruffin community claimed the life of a child Monday morning and left two adults with serious burn injuries, according to local authorities.
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division emergency crews responded shortly after 6:11 a.m. on July 27 to a residence in the 10 block of Mazio Circle, located off Bells Highway near Ruffin in Colleton County. Initial 911 calls reported that two people had escaped the burning home with injuries while another person remained trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived within minutes to find the single-story wood-frame residence approximately 80% engulfed in flames. Crews used a mounted water cannon and multiple handlines to bring the fire under control before conducting an extensive search for hidden fire and hot spots.
Investigators said witnesses reported that all three occupants initially escaped the residence. However, the child reportedly went back inside the home for an unknown reason and was unable to escape.
