Yalobusha County, MS (July 26, 2025) — A longtime volunteer at a Mississippi animal shelter was killed last Friday after being attacked by two dogs while on duty.
According to reports, the fatal incident occurred on July 17 at Second Chance Animal Alliance, a volunteer-run nonprofit dog shelter in Yalobusha County. Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, had worked at the facility for over two years and was in the process of moving a dog into a pen when the attack occurred.
Witnesses say one of the dogs attempted to escape and Phillips tried to block it with his foot. The dog then latched onto his leg and pulled him down, while a second dog entered the pen and joined in the attack. Both dogs—reported to be a pit bull and a pit mix—fatally mauled Phillips. The incident was reportedly caught on surveillance video.
Authorities have not announced whether the dogs have been euthanized or if the shelter will face further investigation.
