Clayton, NC (August 6, 2025) — A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday in Clayton when a pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train traveling through the area.
According to reports, the deadly collision happened near Front Street and O’Neil Street. Officials on the scene confirmed the individual was not crossing at a designated railway crossing but instead entered the tracks through a grassy area between two streets. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the incident, and early findings indicate it was an accident.
The train, traveling from New York to Charlotte, was stopped for nearly two hours before resuming travel just before 7:15 p.m. None of the approximately 200 passengers or crew members aboard the train were injured.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. Clayton police are handling the ongoing investigation.
This marks the second pedestrian fatality involving an Amtrak train in the Clayton area in recent months. Another person was killed in June after being struck near Front Street and Central Street.
