Morro Bay, CA (October 31, 2025) – A single-vehicle crash on Highway 41 near Morro Bay claimed the life of 47-year-old David Winfrey on the night of Monday, October 20. The tragic incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. near Bear Ridge Road, between Atascadero and Morro Bay.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Winfrey was driving a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser southbound when the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons. The car plummeted approximately 350 feet down a steep embankment and caught fire upon impact. First responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Winfrey dead.
Authorities temporarily shut down the area while emergency crews worked to recover the vehicle and investigate the scene. No other individuals were in the vehicle, and it remains unclear whether impairment played a role.
