Ladson, SC (July 1, 2026) – A 5-year-old child died after suffering critical injuries in a dog attack at a caregiver’s home in Ladson on Saturday morning. Authorities are continuing to investigate the tragic incident.
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Chemistry Circle at approximately 7:30 a.m. on June 28 after receiving reports of an active disturbance. When first responders arrived, they found both an adult and a child who had sustained injuries during the dog attack.
The child, identified by the Dorchester County Coroner as Jayceon Gates, and the injured adult were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, Jayceon died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Authorities said the dog involved in the attack was a pit bull terrier. Under South Carolina law, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was notified following the child’s death. Investigators with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, the Crime Scene Unit, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials said an autopsy has been scheduled as the investigation remains ongoing.
