Dakota City, NE (July 1, 2026) – Two people lost their lives following a head-on collision on Highway 77 south of Dakota City early Monday morning. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol , the collision was reported just before 7:30 a.m. on June 29 at the intersection of Highway 77 and 210th Street. When emergency responders arrived, they found a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2022 Ford Edge that had collided head-on.
Investigators said witness statements indicated the Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 77 before striking the Ford Edge. The Malibu was driven by a 33-year-old man originally from South Sioux City who had been living in Homer, Nebraska. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
The driver of the Ford Edge, identified only as a 46-year-old woman from South Sioux City, was airlifted to a hospital in Sioux City for emergency treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.
The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the collision, and additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
